Driving 400 miles through Texas, I couldn't help thinking about the futility (and irony) of border security. It seems almost impossible to "protect" the 2,000 mile US-Mexico border through border patrol checkpoints and fences. These help, but only to a point.
A larger deterrent is the state of the economy. From January to September 2008, 724,000 people were caught trying to cross into the US from Mexico - the lowest annual total since the 1970s. You can bet that this number is going to drop in 2009 - after all, why risk your life if you are going to be unemployed.
