Saina, not Sania

I saw Saina Nehwal lose in the Olympics quarterfinals last year, and liked her immediately. Composed in defeat, you got the feeling that she took the loss as a step forward. She is currently ranked #8 in in the world and just won the Indonesian Open, her first BWF Super Series tournament. The BWF Super Series consisting of 12 tournaments are a new phenomena, akin to the grand slams in tennis.

I can't understand why we don't hear more about Saina; we hear more than needed about Sania Mirza (who, btw, ranks #85). Is it because tennis is more popular than badminton or because controversy sells more than solid performances?

I think tennis as a sport is more popular than badminton and more individuals follow and play the sport. Not only that the opens are better advertised.

I had not heard off Saina until I read your post :) nor have I ever seen any adverts on badminton tournaments.

Saina is in the news a lot here in India. Maybe she's not big news with the overseas community, but just today's TOI had her all over.
